Staying in Phra Nakhon

Phra Nakhon is the peninsula on which Rama I founded Bangkok in 1782. It holds the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Wat Suthat, the Democracy Monument and the Ratchadamnoen Klang boulevard modelled on the Champs-Élysées — roughly 80% of the buildings anyone photographs in Bangkok. Two-storey shophouses in yellow ochre line the streets; Buddha-supply shops on Bamrung Muang sell monks' robes and gold statues; Sao Ching Cha, the 21-metre red teak swing frame, stands in front of Wat Suthat. Tourist numbers are low relative to the density of monuments, so if you base yourself here you get the palaces at 8am in the best light, and by 10am you are back before the tour buses arrive.

The hotels on this list sit in the southern and eastern edges of the district and just beyond it: Charoen Krung Soi 30, Si Phraya Road, Soi Songphra, Soi Phraya Sinhaseni off Rama 4 Road, Rongmueang Road, Soi Fraser And Neave, Soi Chinda Thawin and Charu Mueang Road. They suit history-and-architecture travellers, photographers and couples on a first Bangkok trip who want to be near the sights; families are served by the larger properties with family rooms, and short-break visitors with three nights or fewer get the most old-city time. Skip this area if your trip is more about food, malls and nightlife, or you want a BTS on your doorstep.

Plan your stay

Getting there and around

Phra Nakhon has almost no BTS or MRT access. The MRT Blue Line added Sam Yot and Sanam Chai stations in 2019, which changed things a lot — Sam Yot puts you a 15-minute walk from the Democracy Monument and 10 minutes from Wat Suthat. But most getting-around is still on foot, by taxi, or by river boat. There's little English signage on side streets, which some travellers find charming and others find frustrating. The old city monument circuit runs 4.5 km: start at Wat Pho, walk north to the Grand Palace and Sanam Luang, continue to Wat Mahathat and the amulet market, then east along Ratchadamnoen Klang to Sao Ching Cha and Wat Suthat.

When to go

The site's own advice for the monument circuit is to start at 8:15am at the Grand Palace, do it in two hours, and walk directly on. That timing matters because most first-timers stay in Sukhumvit and bus in for the day, so the palaces are quietest early. In general terms, Bangkok's cool season from November to February is the most comfortable for walking the old city; the hot season from March to May and the rainy months from June to October are harder on foot. Nightlife here is minimal — a few local bars around Phra Athit, some hotel rooftops, and the tourist bars over on Khao San.
