Staying in Phra Nakhon

Phra Nakhon is the historic core of Bangkok, the peninsula on which Rama I founded the capital in 1782. It holds the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Wat Suthat, the Democracy Monument and the Ratchadamnoen Klang boulevard modelled on the Champs-Élysées. This is not Sukhumvit: two-storey shophouses in yellow ochre, Buddha-supply shops on Bamrung Muang, and the 21-metre red teak Sao Ching Cha standing in front of Wat Suthat.

The hotels on this list sit south and east of that monument circuit, around Rama IV Road, Charoen Krung Road, Si Phraya Road and the Chinatown lanes of Samphanthawong and Talat Noi. It suits couples on a first Bangkok trip who want the sights at 8am, photographers and history-focused travellers, and anyone with three nights or fewer. Families are catered for by hotels with family rooms and babysitting, and business travellers by a small number with business centres.

Plan your stay

Getting there and around

Phra Nakhon has almost no BTS or MRT access. The MRT Blue Line added Sam Yot and Sanam Chai stations in 2019, which changed things a lot: Sam Yot puts you a 15-minute walk from the Democracy Monument and 10 minutes from Wat Suthat. Most getting-around is still on foot, by taxi or by river boat. There's little English signage on side streets, which some travellers find charming and others find frustrating. Nightlife is minimal: a few local bars around Phra Athit, some hotel rooftops, and the tourist bars over on Khao San.

When to go

The site's own note on timing is to start at the Grand Palace at 8:15am, when the light is best, do it in two hours and walk directly on before the tour buses arrive by 10am. Beyond that, this district is at its most workable in the cooler, drier months of the year rather than at the height of the rains, since almost all of the sightseeing here is done outdoors on foot between the Grand Palace, Sanam Luang, Wat Suthat and the shophouse alleys.

Questions, answered

Which of these hotels is closest to the Grand Palace?

The site does not give distances from individual hotels to the Grand Palace — only that Sam Yot MRT station is a 15-minute walk from the Democracy Monument and 10 minutes from Wat Suthat. The Rama IV Road hotels sit nearest that MRT stop.

Which hotel is best for families?

SK Boutique Maha Nakhon and Samyan Serene Hotel list family rooms, Triple Y Hotel adds cots and babysitting service, and Bangkok Centre Hotel offers babysitting service, a garden and car parking. Bangkok Centre Hotel is the most complete of the four for families arriving by car.

Do any of these hotels have parking?

Bangkok Centre Hotel lists car parking and Ozone Hotel Bangkok lists self parking. Rest24 Residence has a garage. None of the others on this shortlist mention parking, which is worth knowing in a district where most movement is on foot, by taxi or by river boat.

Is there a pool or spa at any of these hotels?

Bunny Burrow Hostel is the only property on this shortlist that lists a spa. No hotel here lists a swimming pool.

Can I bring a pet?

At One in Hualamphong is the only hotel on this list that states a pet policy, and it is pets not allowed. No other property here mentions pets, so you should assume they are not accepted.

Which hotels have a bar or a restaurant?

At One in Hualamphong has a bar and lounge and a restaurant. Bangkok Centre Hotel, Samyan Serene Hotel, Ago Hotel Chinatown and Talakkia Boutique Hotel list bars, while Intown Residence, T.T. Guesthouse and Bunny Burrow Hostel list restaurants. That matters, because nightlife in Phra Nakhon itself is minimal.

Do any of these hotels offer breakfast?

Ago Hotel Chinatown, Triple Y Hotel and Talakkia Boutique Hotel list breakfast; Talakkia Boutique Hotel also offers breakfast in room. The other properties on this shortlist do not mention breakfast, so check when you arrive.

Which is the highest-rated hotel here?

Metro Hotel and Ago Hotel Chinatown are tied at 4.7 out of 5, from 764 and 290 reviews respectively. SK Boutique Maha Nakhon is next at 4.5 from 511 reviews.
