Staying in Chinatown (Yaowarat)

Chinatown (Yaowarat) is the oldest Chinatown in the world outside China: gold shops and traditional Chinese medicine halls by day, and from 6pm one of the planet's great street-food streets. Yaowarat Road runs roughly 1.5km from the Ong Ang canal to Odeon Circle. The layout is dense and confusing on purpose — the Ratanakosin masterplan didn't reach here, so the district grew as a Chinese immigrant quarter on its own logic. Sampeng Lane is still the original textile market; Talat Kao, running north from Yaowarat, is fresh produce, dried seafood and pork. Since the MRT Blue Line reached Wat Mangkon station on Charoen Krung Road in 2019, the neighbourhood is reachable without a taxi for the first time.

The hotels on this list sit in two bands. Yaowarat Road itself is the food spine (Shanghai Mansion Bangkok, Grand China Bangkok, Hotel Royal Bangkok), with Maitri Chit Road and the small sois just off it behind (The Mustang Blu, Yaowarat Stay). East and south, along Charoen Krung Road and the river, are ASAI Bangkok Chinatown, Hilton Garden Inn Bangkok Riverside, Saan Hotel Sathorn, The Quarter Chaophraya by UHG and Amdaeng Bangkok Riverside Hotel. It suits food-first and culture travellers, and couples who want atmosphere over a resort. Light sleepers should note Yaowarat runs late.

Plan your stay

Getting there and around

The MRT Blue Line changed Chinatown access: Wat Mangkon station on Charoen Krung Road opened in 2019 and drops you 200m from Yaowarat Road. Before that, the neighbourhood was reached by taxi. A self-guided walk starts at Wat Mangkon MRT, goes south to Yaowarat and turns west, weaving the food stalls between Ratchawong Road and Padungdao intersection, cuts south into Sampeng Lane, continues west to Odeon Circle and the Chinatown Gate, and finishes at Wat Traimit. Total 2.5km

When to go

The best hours are 6-11pm on any night except Monday, when many stalls close. The temperature drops, the streetlights come on, and the crowd shifts from local shoppers to a mix of Thai food tourists, Chinese-tourist tour groups and Western food-hunters with cameras. It is crowded in the way that is exhilarating rather than oppressive. Wat Traimit, with the Golden Buddha, is open 8am-5pm, so aim earlier if it is on your list.
