5-star hotels in Bang Rak
Five-star hotels in Bang Rak, Bangkok's original commercial waterfront, where colonial shophouses and riverside luxury sit along the Chao Phraya.
Staying in Bang Rak
Bang Rak stretches along the east bank of the Chao Phraya between Sathorn Pier and the General Post Office on Charoen Krung Road, the oldest paved street in Bangkok. This is where 19th-century Bangkok did business with the world, and the shophouses that Portuguese, Chinese, Muslim, French and British trading houses built still line the sois. Half have become galleries, coffee shops and hotels; the other half still sell wholesale fabric, spices or gold. By day it is a business district; by night Patpong and the rooftop bars take over.
The hotels here cluster around the district's main arteries. Surawong Road carries Amara Bangkok Hotel, Le Meridien Bangkok, Montien Hotel Surawong Bangkok and voco Bangkok Surawong by IHG; North Sathorn Road and Rama IV Road hold So Bangkok Hotel, Dusit Thani Bangkok and Crowne Plaza Bangkok Lumpini Park by IHG. Three more sit just outside the district line, on Wireless Road, Soi Tonson and Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra Road. The mix suits couples and short-break visitors drawn to the riverside and nightlife, business travellers close to Silom's offices, and families, several hotels offering babysitting service.

Getting there and around
The site's shophouse walk starts at Saphan Taksin BTS and runs north on Charoen Krung, past the Shangri-La, the Assumption Cathedral turn-off, the Portuguese Embassy and Soi 30's Warehouse 30, then on past the Old Customs House down Oriental Avenue to O.P. Place, the General Post Office at Soi 32 and the TCDC creative centre, finishing at Bang Rak Market — two hours with photo stops. Bang Rak stretches between Sathorn Pier and the General Post Office; the riverside and Charoen Krung are fine to walk, well lit and with plenty of people.
When to go
Charoen Krung itself goes quiet by 9pm on a weeknight, with a few coffee bars still open around Soi 30. The riverside is lit up then, and Silom Road turns to nightlife at the Patpong end or shuts up shop at the Convent end. Weekends bring Bangkok's coolest crowd to Soi Nana on Maitrichit Road for cocktails at Teens of Thailand or wine at Ba Hao. The road is loud with traffic and buses until about 10pm, so ask for a higher floor or a courtyard-facing room.
