3-star hotels in Bang Rak
A shortlist of 3-star hotels in Bang Rak, Bangkok, all in the Silom and Surawong stretch of the district. It is for travellers who want a central, well-connected base at a mid-range level, whether you are in Bangkok for a short break, on business, or travelling as a couple.
Staying in Bang Rak
Bang Rak is the administrative district along the east bank of the Chao Phraya, and Silom Road is the main street running through it. Locals use the two names loosely, but Bang Rak usually means the riverside western end around Charoen Krung and the piers, while Silom means the corporate and nightlife strip inland toward Lumphini Park. The district holds colonial shophouses, riverside hotels and some of the city's best hawker rice, and it splits by street in the evening: Charoen Krung goes quiet, the riverside glows, and Silom Road is either in nightlife mode at the Patpong end or shutting up shop at the Convent end.
The hotels on this shortlist sit in the Silom and Surawong part of Bang Rak, on or just off Silom Road and Surawong Road and the sois between them, which puts them in the business and nightlife half of the district rather than on the waterfront. That suits couples and short-break visitors who want to walk to bars and restaurants, and business travellers who want to be in the middle of the corporate strip. Families are catered for by a handful of properties with family rooms or cots, and the guest scores across the list are consistently high.

Where to stay in Bang Rak
Silom Road
Silom Road is the corporate and nightlife spine of Bang Rak, loud with traffic and buses until about 10pm and then quiet. Rooms on lower floors above the road get bus rumble, so ask for a higher floor or a courtyard-facing room. The Patpong end turns to nightlife and the Convent end shuts up shop in the evening.
Our picks here: ibis Styles Bangkok Silom · Lido Millennium Hotel · Silom Serene a Boutique Hotel · Triple 8 Inn Bangkok
Surawong Road
Surawong Road runs parallel to Silom and holds the same mix of businesses, bars and restaurants, with Patpong's market and nightlife close by. The area east of Silom Road is safe but has an aggressive tout scene: ignore anyone offering a show and do not follow anyone off the main street.

Getting there and around
Saphan Taksin BTS is the anchor for the western end of Bang Rak, and the district runs along the east bank of the Chao Phraya between Sathorn Pier and the General Post Office on Charoen Krung Road, the oldest paved street in Bangkok. A 3 km Charoen Krung shophouse walk runs from Saphan Taksin BTS north past the Shangri-La, the Assumption Cathedral turn-off, the Portuguese Embassy, Warehouse 30 on Soi 30, the Old Customs House down Oriental Avenue, O.P. Place, the General Post Office at Soi 32 and the TCDC creative centre, finishing at Bang Rak Market. Two hours with photo stops.
When to go
Evenings split the district by street: by 9pm on a weeknight Charoen Krung is quiet with a few coffee bars still open around Soi 30, the riverside is lit up, and Silom Road is either in nightlife mode at the Patpong end or shutting up shop at the Convent end. Weekends bring Bangkok's coolest crowd to Soi Nana on Maitrichit Road for cocktails and wine. Interior sois 30, 32, 36, 42 and 44 stay genuinely peaceful even midday.
