Staying in Silom

Silom runs from Rama IV down to the Chao Phraya, and it is the financial district by day — bank headquarters and a wall of towers around Sala Daeng — then Patpong night market and rooftop bars at night. The sois each have their own character: Soi 2 and Soi 4 are the small, dense gay bar area, Soi 3 to Soi 6 is Indian and Nepalese restaurants, and past Surasak the road goes residential and Portuguese-Catholic. Convent Road and Pan Road, running parallel, are walkable and hold the Bangkok Christian College and the Sri Mariamman Hindu temple.

The hotels here sit along the same stretch: Surawong Road, Silom Road itself, Soi Wat Suan Plu off New Road, and Narathiwas Road in Silom Bangrak, with two further addresses out at Charoennakorn Road, Klong-Tonsai, Klongsan on the river side. It suits business travellers, couples and short-break visitors who want central and safe and walkable to the river piers for the Grand Palace ferry. Families with kids should look elsewhere — the pavements are jammed and the night market is aggressive.
