Getting there and around
Trat is accessible by air, road and bus. Trat Airport, served by Bangkok Airways, is about 30 kilometers from the city center, and buses from Bangkok's Eastern Bus Terminal (Ekkamai) take about 5-6 hours. From Trat, songthaews and taxis connect to the ferry piers at Laem Ngop, where boats depart for Koh Chang, Koh Kood and Koh Mak. From Trat, a songthaew or taxi to Laem Ngop pier takes about 30 minutes, and ferries to Koh Chang run regularly during daylight hours. On the islands, songthaews are the main form of public transport, and motorbike rentals are available.
When to go
The best time to visit Trat is from November to February, during the cool and dry season, when temperatures are milder and rainfall is low, making it ideal for island trips and outdoor activities. From March to May it gets hot, with temperatures often exceeding 35°C. The rainy season runs from June to October, bringing heavy downpours and rough seas, which can affect ferry schedules to Koh Chang, Koh Kood and Koh Mak.
