Staying in Sathorn
Sathorn is two parallel boulevards — North and South Sathorn — split by a khlong, and it works as Bangkok's diplomatic quarter: the Singaporean, French, German, Australian and Belgian embassies sit here, along with the Sukhothai, Banyan Tree, Sofitel So and the pixelated MahaNakhon tower. It is calmer, greener and wealthier than Silom, and barely five minutes' walk from Silom across a footbridge. The BTS Silom Line runs directly over Sathorn between Chong Nonsi and Saphan Taksin, which is why the luxury hotels cluster here.

Getting there and around
The BTS Silom Line runs directly over Sathorn between Chong Nonsi and Saphan Taksin. For the river, take BTS from Chong Nonsi or Sala Daeng to Saphan Taksin (2-3 stops, 20 baht), walk down to Sathorn Pier, then take the orange-flag Chao Phraya Express Boat to Tha Chang pier — 15 baht, 20 minutes on the river; from the pier it is a five-minute walk to the palace gate. Total 40-50 minutes and much more pleasant than a taxi in traffic. Within Sathorn itself, walk the smaller sois rather than the six-lane boulevards, which are full of taxis heading for the expressway on-ramp.
