4-star hotels in Rattanakosin (Old City)
Fourteen 4-star hotels on the royal island where Bangkok began in 1782, chosen for travellers who want the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun on their doorstep rather than a train ride away.
Staying in Rattanakosin (Old City)
Rattanakosin is the artificial island Rama I created in 1782 by digging the Rop Krung canal. Inside its curve stand the Grand Palace, Wat Phra Kaew and Wat Pho; Wat Arun faces them across the river. Beyond the palace gates the streets are old Bangkok proper — two-storey shophouses, army barracks, the Ministry of Defence building — with no BTS, no malls and no rooftop bars worth the name. Tha Tien pier at Wat Pho and Tha Chang pier on the palace side are the launch points for river hops, and Sanam Luang, the great oval field north of the palace, fills with kite-flyers in cool season.
The hotels on this list cluster on that island and just across the river: Maharaj Road, Maharat Road and Soi Tha Tian by the water at Wat Pho, Phraeng Phuthon Road and Ratchadamnoen Klang Road inland, Khao San Road and Chakrapong Road to the north, and the Bangkok Noi bank at Siriraj and Prannok. It suits culture-first couples, photographers and anyone with 2-3 nights who wants to be inside the palace at 8.30am opening, before the tour buses arrive. Nightlife travellers, shoppers and families with young children are better served elsewhere.

Plan your stay
Getting there and around
Rattanakosin has no BTS and only fringe MRT: Sanam Chai station on the MRT Blue Line, opened in 2019, is about 10 minutes' walk from Wat Pho. The traditional approach is by boat — Tha Chang pier is the palace-side landing and Tha Tien pier at Wat Pho is the launch point for river hops, including the short ferry across to Wat Arun. Many visitors arrive at Tha Chang by boat and walk five minutes to the Grand Palace main gate.
When to go
Cool season is the comfortable stretch for walking the palace complex, Wat Pho and Sanam Luang, the oval field north of the palace that fills with kite-flyers in cool season. Timing within the day matters more than the month: the Grand Palace opens at 8.30am, so arriving at 8.15am gets you through the ticket gate before the tour buses. By 10am the courtyards are a wall of tour groups — staying in Rattanakosin itself is the single biggest advantage, because you can walk out of the hotel and be inside before Sukhumvit visitors have finished breakfast.
