Home/Where to stay/Rattanakosin (Old City)/3-star hotels
3-star hotels in Rattanakosin (Old City)
A shortlist of 15 three-star hotels in Rattanakosin (Old City), Bangkok's royal island, for culture-first travellers who want the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun within reach and are happy to trade the BTS for the historic heart of the city.
Staying in Rattanakosin (Old City)
Rattanakosin is the original Bangkok, the artificial island created in 1782 when Rama I dug the Rop Krung canal to define the new capital. Inside its curve sit the Grand Palace, Wat Phra Kaew and Wat Pho, with Wat Arun across the river. There is no BTS, no MRT except the fringe Sanam Chai station on the Blue Line, no shopping malls and no rooftop bars worth the name; the neighbourhood beyond the palaces is two-storey shophouses, army barracks and a few tourist-facing streets around the palace gates.
The hotels on this list sit in and around that island — along Maha Rat Road, Maharat Road, Soi Rambuttri, Soi Phen Pi Marn at Tha Tien, San Chao Pho Sua, Bunsiri Road and Prangsanphasart, with a few further west at Itsaraphap, Wanglang and Bangkok Noi. It suits culture-first travellers, photographers, and anyone with 2-3 nights who wants to reach the palaces at 8am before the crowds; couples and short-break visitors do well here. Nightlife travellers, shoppers and families with young children should look elsewhere.

Getting there and around
Rattanakosin has no BTS, and the MRT only nicks its edge: Sanam Chai station on the Blue Line, opened in 2019, is 10 minutes' walk from Wat Pho. The river does the heavy lifting. Tha Tien pier at Wat Pho is the launch point for river hops, and the 2-baht ferry crosses to Wat Arun and back. Tha Chang pier is the palace-side landing; arrive by boat and the Grand Palace main gate is a five-minute walk. Sanam Luang, the great oval field north of the palace, anchors the northern end, and Phra Athit Road is a short walk beyond for a late lunch.
When to go
Cool season is the obvious window: Sanam Luang is a mostly empty green space with kite-flying in cool season, and the walking route through the old city — Tha Chang to the Grand Palace, south to Wat Pho, across to Wat Arun, north along Maha Rat Road — is a long day best done on foot without heat exhaustion. The 8am rule matters in any season: the Grand Palace opens at 8.30am, and arriving at 8.15am gets you through the ticket gate before the tour buses, with the courtyards a wall of groups by 10am.
