Staying in Kanchanaburi

Kanchanaburi is a provincial capital 130km west of Bangkok, not a Bangkok neighbourhood: it sits on the confluence of the Kwai Yai and Kwai Noi rivers, and the Japanese army bridged the river here in 1942-43 using 60,000 Allied POWs and 200,000 Asian labourers to build the Death Railway toward Burma. Around 100,000 men died, and the town lives with this history openly — three cemeteries, two museums, the bridge itself, and a working section of the original railway that still runs trains. Limestone karsts rise straight out of the River Kwai valley, and the national parks of Erawan, Sai Yok and Srinakarin fill the western half of the province.

The hotels on this list are four-star addresses in the town and its immediate surroundings. That puts guests within easy reach of the war cemetery on Sangchuto Road, the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre museum and the JEATH War Museum, and a short ride from Mae Nam Kwai Road and the bridge. It suits couples and short-break travellers who want the history and the river in one stop, and families or small groups who need family rooms and parking. Two nights covers the town; a third adds Erawan Falls or Hellfire Pass.

Getting there and around

Kanchanaburi is a provincial capital 130km west of Bangkok — a full three-hour drive, a separate province, and the gateway to the River Kwai valley. Within the town, the walking route starts at the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery on Sangchuto Road, crosses to the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre museum, continues north on Sangchuto to the JEATH War Museum, then turns west to the river and follows Mae Nam Kwai Road north 1.5km to the Bridge, crossing and returning via the parallel Chukkadon Road for less traffic — about two hours with museum stops, best between 8 and 10am before the heat. The bridge is a postwar rebuild: the original wartime bridge was bombed by Allied aircraft in 1945 and reconstructed with steel spans provided by Japan as war reparations, though two of the curved spans in the middle are original 1943 sections.

When to go

November to February is dry and pleasantly cool, around 20-30°C. March to May is brutal, often 38-40°C with no sea breeze this far inland. June to October is rainy season — Erawan Falls are at their most spectacular then, but landslides can close park roads, so book any waterfall trip with a weather-flexible schedule between June and September. Two nights is the minimum worth the travel: day one for the town's bridge, cemetery and museums, day two for Erawan Falls or Hellfire Pass. Three nights lets you do both plus a riverside slow morning.

None of the addresses give a distance to the bridge, so the data does not let me rank them that way. In town the walking route runs from the war cemetery on Sangchuto Road via the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre and JEATH War Museum to Mae Nam Kwai Road and the bridge — about two hours with stops.

How many nights should I stay in Kanchanaburi?

All ten hotels on this shortlist are in Kanchanaburi itself, the provincial capital 130km west of Bangkok, on the confluence of the Kwai Yai and Kwai Noi rivers. That places you near the war cemetery, the two museums and the bridge, with the national parks further west in the province.
