Staying in Banglamphu

Banglamphu is what Khao San would look like with the tourists removed. It is a working Bangkok neighbourhood on the Phra Sumen canal: two-storey wooden shophouses, families who have lived on the same soi for four generations, a wet market on Chakrabongse, and the Phra Sumen Fort at the river corner where locals picnic at sunset. The border with Khao San is one block — cross Chakrabongse and the volume drops.

The hotels here sit on both sides of that line. On the Phra Athit side, Chillax Heritage and Alley & Pier are on Phra Athit and Pra Atit Road, close to the river. Around Samsen, you find Bangkok Saran Poshtel and Red Door on Soi Samsen 3, plus Suraya Bangkok on Phra Sumen road itself. The rest cluster around Rambuttri and Tanao. It suits couples, families and anyone over 30 staying more than 3 nights; solo travellers under 25 looking for company are better off on Khao San.

Where to stay in Banglamphu

Phra Athit Road

The river end of Banglamphu, where Phra Sumen Fort stands and locals picnic at sunset. Chillax Heritage and Alley & Pier both sit on this road, putting the canal path, the fort and the old-city temples within a short walk. In the evening, Phra Athit is calm — the noise of Khao San stays one block away.

Our picks here: Chillax Heritage

Soi Samsen 3

A quieter soi off Samsen Road, north of the canal. Bangkok Saran Poshtel and Red Door both have their address here. Samsen is a residential street with shophouse guesthouses and canal-side cafes, and it keeps you close to the old city while putting a little more distance between you and the Khao San strip.

Our picks here: Bangkok Saran Poshtel · Red Door

Rambuttri Road

Rambuttri runs parallel to Khao San and is calmer, with the temple of Chana Songkhram at one end. Tinidee Trendy Bangkok Khaosan and Lamphuhouse Bangkok SHA Extra Plus Certified are both on this road and its sois, with breakfast served and 24-hour reception. Expect the sound level to rise as you approach Khao San.

Plan your stay

Getting there and around

There is no BTS or MRT in Banglamphu itself. The nearest MRT, Sam Yot, is a 20-minute walk; the nearest BTS, National Stadium, requires a bus or taxi. You will use taxis, tuk-tuks and river boats more than trains, and for Sukhumvit dinners plan 30-45 minutes each way. A good walking loop starts at Phra Sumen Fort, follows the canal path east along Khlong Banglamphu, crosses past the Democracy Monument and returns via Tanao Road.

When to go

Sunset is the neighbourhood's own hour: locals gather at Phra Sumen Fort at the river corner to picnic as the light goes. Monks do alms rounds at 6am, so early mornings are also part of the rhythm here rather than a time to avoid. Evenings are warm year-round, and the canal path east along Khlong Banglamphu is walkable in the cooler part of the day.
