About Lop Buri

Beyond the monkeys, Lop Buri has a rich architectural heritage. King Narai the Great made it a second capital in the 17th century, building the Phra Narai Ratchaniet palace, which now houses a museum, and the restored royal reception hall at Phra Prang Sam Yot. The old town is compact, with ruins, temples, and colonial-era shophouses within walking distance. Lop Buri is also a major railway junction and an agricultural trade centre, giving it a lively, lived-in feel. The city's mix of ancient ruins and everyday Thai life makes it a rewarding stop for travellers interested in history and culture.

When to go

The best time to visit Lop Buri is during the cool season, from November to February, when temperatures are more comfortable for walking around the ruins. The annual Monkey Festival, held in late November, is a unique event where locals feed the macaques a lavish banquet. The hot season from March to May can be very hot, while the rainy season from June to October brings occasional heavy showers. Weekdays are generally quieter at the main sights.
