Getting there and around
Satun is reachable by bus from Bangkok, about 12 hours, and from Hat Yai, about 2 hours. There is no commercial airport in Satun; the nearest are in Trang, about 1.5 hours by road, and Hat Yai, about 2 hours. From Satun town, songthaews and buses go to Pak Bara Pier, where speedboats and ferries depart for Koh Lipe and Tarutao. Tammalang Pier, south of Satun town, has ferries to Langkawi, Malaysia. On the islands, walking and longtail boats are the main ways to get around.
When to go
The best time to visit Satun is the dry season from November to April, when the sea is calm and visibility for diving is good. The wet season from May to October brings rain and rough seas, and some islands may have reduced boat services. Koh Lipe is busiest from December to February, so expect more crowds then.
