3-star hotels in Koh Tao
A shortlist of 3-star hotels on Koh Tao, the small Thai island known for diving and relaxed beaches. It is for travellers who want mid-range comfort, a pool or beach access, and an easy base near Mae Haad, Sairee or the quieter southern bays.
Staying in Koh Tao
Koh Tao keeps a relaxed, low-rise character: no high-rise buildings, no large chain resorts, and accommodation that runs from simple bungalows to boutique hotels, with a high proportion of mid-range and budget options. The main village, Mae Haad, is where ferries arrive and where you find banks, shops, markets and dive schools. Sairee Beach, a long stretch of sand on the west coast, is the busiest area, with beach bars and restaurants, while bays such as Chalok Baan Kao, Ao Leuk and Tanote are quieter.
These 3-star hotels sit in several of those areas. Koh Tao Beach Club, Dd Hut Koh Tao and Koh Tao Montra Resort are closest to the centre, within 0.5 km of it. Sensi Paradise Beach Resort, on Mae Haad, and Blue Tao Beach Hotel are around 1 km out. View Point Resort, Chintakiri Resort, Coral View Resort, Pinnacle Koh Tao Resort and Beach Club by Haad Tien lie 2 to 2.4 km from the centre, near Chalok Baan Kao, Haad Sai Dang, June Juea Beach and Haad Tien. Wind Beach Resort and Nangyuan Island Dive Resort sit further out. Couples and divers will find the quieter bays and dive facilities appealing, families the family rooms and pools, and business travellers the desks, wifi and central addresses.

Getting there and around
Koh Tao has no airport. Most visitors arrive by ferry from the mainland or from nearby islands. Ferries depart from Chumphon and Surat Thani (Don Sak pier) on the mainland, and from Koh Samui and Koh Phangan. The journey from Chumphon takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, while from Koh Samui it takes around 1.5 hours. Boats arrive at Mae Haad pier. Alternatively, you can fly to Koh Samui or Surat Thani and connect by ferry. On the island, songthaews (shared pickup trucks) and taxis serve the main roads; renting a scooter is popular but requires caution on steep, winding routes.
When to go
The best time to visit Koh Tao is during the dry season, from February to April, when seas are calm and visibility for diving is at its best. The southwest monsoon from May to October brings occasional heavy showers and rougher seas, though diving continues. The northeast monsoon from November to January can also bring rain and wind. Temperatures remain warm year-round, typically between 25°C and 32°C.
