Staying in Ko Chang Tai

Ko Chang Tai covers the southern and western coastline of Ko Chang, with jungle-covered hills rising behind the shore and small fishing communities along the water. The island belongs to Mu Ko Chang National Park, known for its waterfalls, coral reefs and mangrove forests, so days fill up with snorkelling, diving, jungle trekking and long stretches on the sand. Tourism is well developed here but the area stays less built-up than Phuket or Samui.

These 3-star hotels sit along the west-coast beach strip and just inland. Kaibae Hut Resort and Koh Chang Cliff Beach Resort are at Kai Bae Beach; White Sand Beach Resort and Banpu Koh Chang are at White Sand Beach; Siam Beach Resort is at Lonely Beach; Yuyu Golden Beach is at Bang Bao; The Spa Koh Chang Resort is at Baan Salak Kok; and Aana Resort & Spa at Banklong Praow is the closest of them to the centre. The mix suits couples, families and divers, with plenty of outdoor pools, spa and massage facilities and private or nearby beaches.

Getting there and around

Ko Chang is reached through Trat Province on the mainland. From Bangkok, direct buses and minivans run to Trat in about 5–6 hours, and from Trat's Laem Ngop pier, ferries cross to Ko Chang's Ao Sapparot pier in around 45 minutes. You can also fly to Trat Airport (TDX) from Bangkok with a short onward transfer to the pier. On the island, songthaews (shared pickups) and taxis serve the main west-coast road; renting a motorbike is common. Ferries also connect to neighbouring islands.

When to go

The dry season from November to February is the best time to visit: cooler weather, calm seas and low rainfall. March to May turns hotter and more humid, with occasional thunderstorms. The southwest monsoon brings heavy rain and rough seas from June to October, and some businesses may close, though the island remains accessible and lush.
