Home/Where to stay/Khao San/3-star hotels
3-star hotels in Khao San
A shortlist of 3-star hotels around Khao San, chosen for travellers who want the old city on foot during the day and the bars on their doorstep at night — with a guest score, address and facilities behind every pick.
Staying in Khao San
Khao San is Bangkok's backpacker strip, and the site's own description doesn't pretend otherwise: bass from the clubs runs until 2am, then delivery trucks and street cleaners take over until 5am. The upside is a road packed with people until 2am, watched closely enough that walking back to Rambuttri alone at 3am is fine. First-time solo travellers and anyone who wants to meet others in about four minutes are squarely the audience. Families and light sleepers are told, plainly, to look at Banglamphu proper or Phra Nakhon instead.
These hotels sit within that historic core rather than on the strip itself — along Phahurat Road, Maha Chai Road, Bamrungmuang Road, Larn Luang Road, Fueang Nakhon Road and the sois off them, in Wang Burapha Phirom, Samranrat and Phra Nakhon. That puts the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun day-trip territory within reach, and the walk the site maps out — Giant Swing, Wat Suthat, the Buddha-supply stretch of Bamrung Muang, Democracy Monument, back down Ratchadamnoen Klang to Soi Rambuttri — starts more or less from your door. Best for two nights of novelty, couples who don't mind noise, and short-break travellers who'd rather spend the money on food than on a room.

Quiet rooms
The site is blunt that Khao San itself is loud until 2am and suggests sleeping elsewhere in Phra Nakhon. Feung Nakorn Balcony Rooms and Cafe, The Asadang Old Time Bangkok and the two Maruay Living Apartments on Maha Chai Road all list non smoking rooms as standard; The Asadang goes further with a non smoking hotel policy and free bottled water.

Where to stay in Khao San
Phra Nakhon
The old royal district — Grand Palace, boulevards designed to look like Paris, and small guesthouses in the shophouse alleys. Grande Ville Hotel on Maha Chai Rd, Tim Mansion on Mahachai Rd in Samranrat and The Grand Palace Hostel on Phahurat Rd all sit in this district, the calmest side of the shortlist. The site calls it the alternative for anyone who values sleep.
Our picks here: Grande Ville Hotel · Tim Mansion · The Grand Palace Hostel
Wang Burapha Phirom
Named in the addresses of Grande Ville Hotel and The Grand Palace Hostel, this is the strip of Phra Nakhon between Maha Chai and Phahurat. It is shophouse and market territory rather than party territory, and the site maps the walk west down Bamrung Muang Road — the Buddha-supply street — straight through it on the way to the Giant Swing and Wat Suthat.
Our picks here: Grande Ville Hotel · The Grand Palace Hostel
Bangkok Yai
Across the river from the old city, on the Thonburi side, where Kinn Stay50 Bangkok sits on a mosque-side lane off Thetsaban Sai 1. The site covers the royal island and Khao San rather than the Thonburi bank, so treat this one as a base for crossing to Wat Arun and the Grand Palace rather than for the strip itself. Breakfast and breakfast in room are both offered.

Getting there and around
The site doesn't publish arrival times or transfer details, but getting around the old city here is by foot. The mapped Khao San to the river loop runs 3 km: from the top of Khao San by the Burger King, east to Tanao Road, right past the school into Sao Ching Cha, past Wat Suthat, west down Bamrung Muang Road, through the Democracy Monument roundabout, then back along Ratchadamnoen Klang to Soi Rambuttri. Note that the royal island area has no BTS and no malls, so tuk-tuks, taxis and the river are the alternatives to walking.
When to go
Nothing about seasons, months or dates appears in the site's own text for Khao San, so the useful advice is about hours rather than months: the road is busy with people until 2am, clubs run until 2am, and from then until 5am delivery trucks and street cleaners take over. Daytimes are quiet on the strip, and the site's own view is that the area has no daytime charm beyond the walk to the temples.
