Getting there and around

Samut Songkhram is about 70–80 kilometres southwest of Bangkok. By car, take Highway 35 (Thonburi–Pak Tho) and then Highway 4, which takes around 1.5 hours depending on traffic. Buses and minivans depart from Bangkok's Southern Bus Terminal (Sai Tai Mai) to Samut Songkhram town. Trains from Bangkok's Wongwian Yai station run to Mahachai, where you can cross the river by ferry and continue by train to Mae Klong. Within the province, songthaews (shared pickups) and motorbike taxis serve local routes, but having your own vehicle or renting a bicycle gives more flexibility to explore the dispersed attractions.

When to go

The best time to visit is during the cool season, from November to February, when temperatures are milder and rainfall is low. The hot season from March to May can be very warm, while the rainy season from June to October brings frequent short showers. The Amphawa Floating Market is busiest on weekend evenings year-round, and major festivals such as Loy Krathong (usually in November) can draw crowds.
