About Phayao

Where to stay in Phayao

Kwan Phayao lakeside. The eastern shore along Phahonyothin Road has the best lake views, with several hotels and guesthouses within walking distance of the promenade, restaurants and the morning market.

Phayao town centre. Around the intersection of Phahonyothin and Chai Kwan roads, this area puts you near the bus station, banks, shops and the old town's temples, though rooms generally lack lake views.

Ban Tom and eastern outskirts. A quieter residential area east of the centre, with a few resorts and hotels set back from the main road; you will need a vehicle or tuk-tuk to reach the lake.

Highway 1 (Super Highway) area. Several modern hotels cluster along this bypass west of town, convenient for travellers with cars but a short drive from the lake and night market.

Getting there and around

Phayao has no commercial airport; the nearest is Chiang Rai's Mae Fah Luang Airport, about 100 km north, or Chiang Mai International Airport, roughly 150 km southwest. Buses from Bangkok's Mo Chit terminal take about 10 to 11 hours, while services from Chiang Mai take 3 to 4 hours and from Chiang Rai around 1.5 to 2 hours. The bus station is in the town centre. Songthaews and motorbike taxis handle local trips; tuk-tuks are available but less common. Renting a bicycle or motorbike is a good way to explore the lake and nearby temples. For travel within Phayao Province, songthaews leave from the market area to districts such as Dok Khamtai and Chiang Muan.

When to go

The cool season from November to February is the most comfortable for walking and cycling around Kwan Phayao, with lower humidity and clear skies. March to May is hot and hazy, often with smoke from agricultural burning. The rainy season from June to October brings afternoon downpours and lush green scenery, but some rural roads may flood. The lake is especially attractive in the late rainy season when water levels are high.
