About Nang Rong

Unlike Buri Ram city, which has its own airport and stadium, Nang Rong keeps a smaller, more local feel. Most visitors use it as a base for Phanom Rung and nearby Prasat Muang Tam, then move on. The town has a handful of modest hotels and resorts, several of which are listed on our site, and a compact centre where you can find food stalls, a night market and basic services. The surrounding countryside is flat rice plain dotted with sugar palm and small villages, and the silhouette of Phanom Rung mountain rises to the south.

Where to stay in Nang Rong

Around the railway station and highway junction. This central area puts you within walking distance of the morning market, night market and the main road where buses and songthaews to Phanom Rung pass. It is the most convenient base if you do not have your own transport.

Along the road to Phanom Rung (Highway 218). Several resorts and hotels sit on the approach to the historical park, roughly 20–30 minutes from the summit. Staying here cuts your morning travel time to the ruins and gives easier access to Prasat Muang Tam.

Near Nang Rong town centre (around the fresh market). The area around the main fresh market and the clock tower has a cluster of small hotels and guesthouses. It is handy for food and local shops, and still only a short ride from the bus station.

Getting there and around

Nang Rong is on the Bangkok–Ubon Ratchathani railway line, with several daily trains from Bangkok's Hua Lamphong or Krung Thep Aphiwat station; the journey takes around six to eight hours. Buses from Bangkok's Mo Chit terminal to Buri Ram or Nang Rong run throughout the day and take about five to six hours. By car, take the Friendship Highway (Route 2) northeast from Bangkok; Nang Rong is roughly 300 kilometres away. Once in town, songthaews (shared pickups) and motorbike taxis cover short distances, and you can hire a songthaew or tuk-tuk for the trip to Phanom Rung and Muang Tam.

When to go

The cool season from November to February is the most comfortable time to visit, with lower humidity and pleasant mornings for exploring the ruins. The annual Phanom Rung festival, which includes a light-and-sound presentation at the temple, usually takes place in late March or early April. The rainy season from May to October brings greener landscapes but also slippery paths at the historical park.
