Getting there and around
Mae Hong Son has a small domestic airport with flights from Chiang Mai, and the province is also reached by road from Chiang Mai on Route 1095, a mountain road with many curves that can take several hours, or via the longer southern loop through Mae Sariang. Buses and minivans connect Mae Hong Son with Chiang Mai and other towns in the region. In town, songthaews and tuk-tuks cover short trips, and renting a scooter or car is common for reaching waterfalls, caves and villages, though the mountain roads require care. Many guesthouses and resorts can arrange local transport.
When to go
The cool season, from November to February, is the most comfortable time to visit, with cooler mornings and clear views, though nights in the hills can be cold. March and April are hotter and often smoky from agricultural burning, and the rainy season from May to October brings green landscapes, full rivers and occasional road washouts. The town is busiest around the cool-season holidays.
