About Ko Yao
The islands offer a glimpse of authentic island life, with small villages, mosques, and friendly locals. The surrounding waters are dotted with limestone karsts, making it a popular base for exploring Phang Nga Bay by boat. Kayaking, snorkeling, and island-hopping are common activities. Accommodation ranges from simple bungalows to upscale resorts, with many options along the west coast facing the sunset. The absence of mass tourism means you can often have a beach to yourself.
Where to stay in Ko Yao
Ko Yao Noi. The more developed of the two islands, with the main pier, villages, and a range of restaurants and shops. It's convenient for exploring the east coast and nearby islands.
Ko Yao Yai. The larger island, quieter and more rural, with long stretches of beach on the west coast and scattered fishing villages. Ideal for those seeking seclusion.
Pasai Beach. On Ko Yao Noi, this west-facing beach offers sunset views and a cluster of resorts and bungalows. It's close to the pier and local eateries.
Laem Had Beach. A sandbar connecting Ko Yao Yai and Ko Yao Noi at low tide, with shallow waters and a peaceful setting. Nearby accommodations are mostly small-scale.
Getting there and around
Ko Yao is reached by boat from Phuket or Krabi. From Phuket, boats depart from Bang Rong Pier, about 30 minutes by road from Phuket International Airport. From Krabi, boats leave from Tha Len Pier. The crossing takes around 30 minutes to Ko Yao Noi and up to an hour to Ko Yao Yai, depending on the vessel. On the islands, songthaews (shared pickups) and motorbike taxis are the main transport; some resorts offer pickup. Renting a scooter is a common way to explore, but roads can be steep and winding.
When to go
The best time to visit Ko Yao is during the dry season from November to April, when seas are calm and rainfall is low. This period offers ideal conditions for boating, kayaking, and beach activities. The monsoon months from May to October bring occasional heavy showers and rougher seas, which may limit boat trips to Phang Nga Bay. Temperatures remain warm year-round, typically ranging from 25°C to 32°C.
