Traffic on Sukhumvit and Rama IV can crawl for hours, parking is scarce and expensive, and the BTS, MRT and Chao Phraya Express Boat cover almost everything a visitor wants. Rent a car only if you are driving to Kanchanaburi or Khao Yai, and pick it up on the way out of town. For Ayutthaya, take the train from Hua Lamphong or Krung Thep Aphiwat station — it is cheaper and faster.
